A remarkable woman, the tragic passing of Ellen Joyce Loo is another tragic reminder about the importance of discussing mental health. After suffering from bipolar disorder for a number of years, the singer’s personal struggles with mental illness became overwhelming and was the cause behind her death. Loo’s story confirms professional help or medication isn’t a quick fix and will not resolve mental health problems immediately. Who are they? Headspace is targeted towards young adults aged between 12-25, however not exclusive to. They provide assistance on a variety of issues including mental and physical health, work and study, and drug abuse problem.
How Can Headspace help you? Headspace provides face-to-face and online counselling for reducing stress and tackling difficulties.
Office hours: 9 am – 5 pm Monday to Friday.
Cost: Free or low cost
Location? Almost every distinct in Sydney has Headspace. The closest Headspace office for our UNSW Hong Kong students is Headspace Bondi Junction.
How to make an appointment? Ring or email them directly to arrange a time once you find your nearest centre.
Who are they? Lifeline offers 24/7 crisis support and suicide prevention service.
How Can Lifeline help you? If you call Lifeline, they will first listen to your situation, then provide immediate support and information for services available to you.
Cost: Calling Lifeline from a landline will be charged the cost of a local call, however calling from mobiles are free.

It was really a heartbreaking news. Loo was an amazing singer who won Jinqu Award two years ago where she publically thanked her wife, which was a brave act.
